Busch takes celebration in a new direction

HAMPTON, Ga. -- The victory lap that Kurt Busch took after Sunday's victory in the Kobalt Tools 500 was something different.

He didn't do what the late Alan Kulwicki once called a "Polish Victory Lap," driving forward the wrong way around the track going from Turn 4 back toward Turn 1. It was, in fact, a mirror-image of that lap. Kurt drove in reverse around the track beginning with Turn 1.

So should we call it the Hsilop Victory Lap (pronounced Shylop), since that's Polish spelled backward?

Busch said he and some of his buddies came up with the idea for the reverse run one night over a few beers. The buddies wanted Busch to call it "The Donkey."

God knows why. Surely we can do better than that.

Here are some potential names for the lap. Tell me which ones you like, or give me your own ideas:

Victory Pal -- Pal is Lap spelled backward. Get it?

Miller Time Rewind -- Sponsorship driven, but I don't know that Miller necessarily wants to be associated with driving backward.

The Vice Versa -- Because it was the opposite of what you'd expect the winner to do.

Doubleback -- This is among my favorites. Busch's car number is 2, so that's where the "double" comes in.

Backout -- Instead of a burnout, you do the backout.

Throwback -- Busch said he drove Sunday at Atlanta like he it was old-school Darlington or old-school Rockingham. So this would definitely apply.

Backlash (or Backstroke, or Stickback, or Throwback, or Runback, or Rollback) -- Just about any "back" pun would work.

Tip It Back Lap -- Another sponsor-related opportunity. After the 2 car wins, tip back an ice-cold Miller and have a ball. You could even see the ad campaign surrounding this one, which came from a caller on "The Morning Drive" on the Sirius NASCAR Radio show Monday morning.

I gotta be honest I am sick of burnouts. They seem so passe. I like that he did something different. Do we really need to name it?

Two more from the radio this morning. "Beer Run" and "Backdraft"

So cool that he won! I was all ready to go with the "Double back" but I kinda like "Backdraft" too! It would certainly make for a great commercial!

I like Beer Run better then Backdraft too similar to backwash. I still think a name is unnecessary still.

How about the Polish Polish victory lap!

And yall think Digger is silly????

No I think Digger is a waste of time, intelligence and space in my brain better used to store pictures of hot girls.

How about:

"A sign of things to come"

Busch will be seemingly driving backwards for the remainder of the season after this unlikely showing.

I like "Double Back"...

Am I the only one who got "The Donkey"? as in "kiss my >>>"? I thought it was great. I do like the Beer Run or the Backdraft best.

I like Back Drive... It would be kewl to see a Back Drive when it is preceded by a Back Out (a burn out in reverse).

I think Digger represents FOXs attempt to get their animation guys some work in __SCAR. Personally, I would like to see more human interest type stories on the drivers. If they spent one segment each week on one driver they would still come up short of drivers at the end of the season. I watched NASCAR on Wide World of Sports in the '70s before it was live every race. With the dollars spent on the race program each week today it would be nice to know more about the drivers... esp. like Kyle and the work at VJ Gang... But instead, we get Digger... Why not call that thing "Track Cam" and be done with it. Unfortunately, that weekly segment will not happen under the current TV agreement. Future NASCAR TV contracts should include a NASCAR produced segment that NASCAR can use to promote itself, an NFL Films sort of thing.

I like Smoke... it's good to see him unwound. It would be interesting to see those Busch Boys team up together with their on team. I believe they could challenge the super teams for a championship...

Thanks David...

i vote that we call it a bass ackwards rerun

i think he was just unwinding after a grooling day at the office and decide to mix it up a little by doing a pal yrotciv....

I like The Bass Ackward. I think it sums up what most of the NASCAR community (all of those who were sober) were thinking.

I think "The Donkey" may be sexual innuendo too... Maybe they could call it the Dirty Sanchez, or perhaps the Rusty Trombone... Just an idea.

Not only is "Digger" silly, but so are the other cartoon characters that FOX lets broadcast the race.

I think he just wanted every one to get a pic of the side of the car that wasn't all scratched all up.

I'm gonna chime in with something a little different. ...

Roll Reversal

It also would have been a pretty good headline for Kurt Busch's victory as well.

What no one has mentioned is that all the cheap seats were full (Turn 3). We were shoulder to shoulder. Its economics, There are many different activities that all compete for a shrinking pool of disposable entertainment income.
