Wherever the "line" is, this goes over it

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Lowe's Motor Speedway has been known to get a little outrageous with its promotions sometimes, but the one the track announced late Saturday goes over the line.

Beginning at noon on Monday, the Charlotte track will sell tickets to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on May 16 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 24 at a special price.

A total of 1,000 combined tickets for those two races will be sold at a price equal to the number of cars involved in the biggest wreck in Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway.

So if there's a 15-car wreck at Talladega, the Charlotte tickets will go for $15 each. Get it?

Now I suppose it could be argued that the best thing for fans would be for there to be only one-car incidents in the race at Talladega so Lowe's Motor Speedway would sell 1,000 tickets for $1 buck each.

But the very idea of tying ticket prices, even for a quick promotion, to the number of Sprint Cup drivers who get involved in a wreck at a place as scary as Talladega can be rubs me the wrong way.

You can tell me to "lighten up" if you want to, but I don't see the humor in what Matt Kenseth went through in his car in Saturday's Nationwide Series race. Kenseth wasn't hurt and everybody is thankful for that, but that doesn't mean anybody should be making light of what happens when cars start slamming into each other at 190 mph.

"The talk around the Talladega race is always about 'The Big One,' "said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. "But Sunday, if only a few drivers get caught up in the biggest wreck, the deal on Monday is that much sweeter. Plus, it gives the fans a chance to save some real money on another 'Big One,' the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600."

Fans have to call (800) 455-FANS or go to the Lowe's Motor Speedway ticket office to take advantage of the offer beginning at noon Monday.

  1. What a stupid idea. For the lucky 1,000 people who will get tickets, I hope the biggest wreck is a one car deal.

For the drivers who put their lives on the line every week to entertain us, I hope there are zero wrecks. I haven't seen the video of Kenseth's wreck but the pictures were scary enough.

I'd love to see a wreck free race. I wonder if Lowes would give the tickets away for free in that case.

Very good, but I am amazed to see criticism of LMS - and giving the phone number for the track does seem curious under the circumstances.

  3. I hate to say this but they're going to look pretty stupid if someone gets hurt during the race.

i think they could have found a more acceptable way to tie the race into it. Perhaps the number of cautions times $5 or something.

  4. They should have made it a "if Jr. wins then 1000 tickets will be X dollars".

    Anywho, 'dega isn't a race anyway...it's a crap shoot...

All I need to see is the last 10 laps. The rest of the "race" is just filler.

  5. How about "if Jr. makes every pit-stop error free then...."

But then that might tick of Jr. Nation. LOL.

  6. marcus smith needs a dope slap big time! this is a disgusting promotion by someone who should know better.
david, i agree with richard in nc: why give the phone number at the end of a blog about how horrible the promotion idea is for the sport? how about dropping that out? if folks want to jump on this bandwagon, they can bloody well look up the number themselves, doncha think?

  7. I guess they have forgotten the 2001 Daytona 500. The freivers should refuse to take the grenn flag at Talladega until this silly promotion is lifted. One can cetainly tell Humpy is no longer involved. This must be the idea of the Golden Boy Smith. He is a real punk who has never worked a day in his life.

  8. Why should anyone cover their asses? Give the phone numbers, emails, cell phones. People should be outraged.

  10. Well, not to be the bearer of negativity but, Many, many folks(me included) watch the super speedway races just for the "big one". Other than that, there is no compelling reason to watch the shuffling. Ever since Bobby Allison's fateful trip into the front stretch fence, there is no real reason to watch this pseudo drama just to see who gets lucky coming off of turn 4 on the last lap. I say make every person on the grounds sign a bullet-proof waiver and take off the restricters- then we'll see who has the marbles to keep their foot down all the way into the turns. We might hurt a few drivers or worse, but remember people- thats what drew us to NASCAR so many years ago! Its was the speed and danger!!! Now, all we have are pretty spokesmodels driving overgrown legends cars. I'm sorry but even I( a life long racer), can't stomach to watch this crap...........

  11. Anonymous #5: You beat me to it - sell the tickets for the price equivalent of how many times Dale Jr. screws up a pit stop. Wait....that could get expensive.

Anonymous #8: This idea was probably that of Marcus Smith, track President, who is the son of the track owner. When you're done getting HIS coffee, you can leave YOUR employee manual on the desk for the next person who has your job.

  12. The real laugh will be on anyone who buys these tickets. They are probably the worst seats at the track, and anything more than a single car incident means they are over priced. Marcus Smith may be a spoiled brat, but he didn't get Humpy's job by being a dummy.

  13. He got the job by being Brutons son. Humpy has forgotten more about race promotions than Bruton and his son together.

  14. This promo is all Marcus Smith. Speaks to his real attitude and respect for the drivers! I have a question, if there is "the big one", do any injuries or death count for some form of additional discount??

  15. Even at $1, who the h*ll wants to go watch these quasi-race cars and have to deal with approx 100000 fans, traffic, and general blah experience Nascar has become? There's no excitement anymore since the "new" France started catering to the TV and not the fans. Keep your cheap seats and I'll watch some of the race from the comfort of my home.

  16. NASCAR sends the drivers out with restrictor plates 4 time a year knowing there is going to be "the big one". How come nobody is griping about those to tracks selling tickets at any price. They sell tickets to these races for way more than 1-15 dollars. They are the ones causing this promotion.

All they have to do is take some of the banking out of one end of each track and no more restrictor plates. Daytona needs repaved anyway. No more big ones. No more promotions. Teams save millions.

And please don't tell me it would be too expensive for the France family. Add up the money over the years of restrictor racing lost by car owners and I bet you would just about enough to pay for one of the tracks to be re-aligned. But then that doesn't come out of the France pockets.

I couldnt agree with you more DP.

Couldnt we find something a little more constructive for the sport... Like the amount of leaders?

shouldnt be more then 20 or so thats still a cheap cheap ticket.

  18. Well on lap 7 it looks like the cost is $14 according to Fox, unless there were more cars involved than they listed. NASCAR.com lists 14 also.

  19. I can't believe that a track would wish the possible injury or death of a driver to drive the ticket sales of a race. We have gone to races since the early 70's and all we want to see is a good, competitive race with no injuries. The mindset of peope today is amazing. Just reading some of the posts makes me sick.

  21. Pooles rankings for Monday.
Junior will fly faster up the rankings than Mark Martin did last week.
He will leave JG and JJ where they are.
    Burton will probably zoom.
Edwards and the rest will fall behind.
Poole has no credibility and Nascar has none either.Poole is a liberal. That's the basis for this blog.
